What I think about working with a volunteer mentor
At first I wasn’t sure but the more I got to know my mentor I found it easier to speak to him. The more I let out the more he could help, it’s good to speak to someone who always speaks positive especially when your release is coming. I didn’t think I could learn as much as I did, things I learnt I will definitely use in the future.
I believe working with a mentor will help prisoners not offend on the out, they will create a friendship with their mentor. They will trust their mentor.
Their mentor will see them on the out for 5 to 6 months to make sure they’re doing good like going college or having a job and not doing crime.
When I didn’t know about something my mentor would look it up on the computer. If I needed help in prison my mentor would try his best to help. We set targets- things I never want to do and things I want to do like that are good for prisoners.
The one that had me shocked was a ‘life line’. It was a line from 5 years ago until now. Down meant sad, up meant happy. My mentor’s was up most of the time, mine was up down up down up down. I would advise all prisoners to have a mentor. I really think it’s doing good for me so it should be good for other people. Thank you for listening.
